Fishing Day 1

Today we has a fantastic start to the fishing block for 2010. The weather was glorious and we arrived at Ardgowan fisheries with a new group of fishermen, and fishergirls! The only thing missing from a perfect days fishing was... a fish! Hopefully we will make up for this in future weeks. :)

Broader Curriculum is back for it's third year!

After a very successful year in BC last year, we have now extended the programme to take in S3, and are now offering three options each term. Mrs Creighton has joined Miss Rukin and Mr Jewell on the BC team!

This term pupils have chosen from ukulele, fishing and iPad games.

Here are the ukulele group- those who learnt to play last year are developing their skills teaching new players!

And of course, we had time for a break in the coffee shop!

Deborah and Robyn

Here are the first pieces of folio art work by Deborah and Robyn in S5. Deborah is looking at the theme of "Make up" and Robyn is looking at "Baking". A great start!

S4 Art

S4 artists were brainstorming themes for their expressive folios today - Lara made a great suggestion and will be looking at "Japan" for her higher art course.

We then looked briefly at the work of contemporary artist Peter Howson whom we will be studying over the course of the year.

After that it was onto some practical work - portraits!

S2 folders

S2 were finishing off their type drawing letters for their folders today. Each letter was made up of adjectives to describe themselves. They tried to only use adjectives which began with the letter they were creating... but that was quite difficult for the less common letters!

Juxtaposer!

Megan and Massimo in S5 were learning to use a very useful art app called "Juxtaposer" today. It allows you to take elements from different images and merge them together into one combined image. It is a great tool for developing ideas in expressive folio work.

A great start in Higher modern studies!

The modern studies students have got off to a great start this week as we have plunged back into our examination of wealth and inequalities in the UK. We have used power points, youtube videos, news articles and case studies to build up a picture of the relation between health and wealth. Megan and Bec are working very hard and are becoming increasingly confident in writing mature, extended, well balanced essays on difficult issues.

Study period in S4

S4's are enjoying using their iPads. Today they have a study class with Miss R. Most of them are choosing to study using their iPads, and say they prefer studying using them! They are choosing what is the most useful use of their time themselves, today. Some are catching up on the latest news stories from around the world, including the South American miners and the security fears following David Cameron's recent Afghanistan trip. Others are revising for a test in Modern Studies this afternoon, and others are going over notes from previous lessons to check their understanding.

S2 Geographers

S2 are analysing travel brochures today, in preparation for writing their own. Each pupil had brought in leaflets/brochures and are identifying good/bad aspects. They are filling our ideas box on the board with good aspects, and putting less effective aspects round the outside. By the end if the lesson, each will have a guide to a perfect travel brochure written in Pages on their iPad.

Type drawing

S1/2 were using an art application called Type Drawing today to create names for their art folders. It was great fun!

S5 artists

Robyn and Deborah have joined the S5 art class this year and made a good start today on their expressive investigative work.

Meanwhile, the established artists began their design research project about Coco Chanel.

S4 Drama

For homework in drama, pupils are practicing and performing short monologues to develop their acting skills. Here is Zander in full flow as Cruella De Vil...

We also began the Int 2 drama skills unit by looking at the topic of power. We did some brainstorming and discussion and then looked at still images to represent power.

Here are some creations by Lara and Beth using two excellent apps called "Type drawing" and "Brushes":
