S4/5 Art & Drama

Today was a busy day in art and drama for S4 & S5.

In drama, students were busy preparing for their upcoming practical exam on 1st April by recording their lines into "Line learner" on their iPads.

Robyn completed this colourful oil pastel still life for her baking theme:

S4/5 Drama

Today pupils were painting their giant candle and cutting out the patterns for their 'mouse' costumes:

P6/7

P6/7 were doing some digital doodling today. They created these cartoons in brushes by doodling with certain letters and shapes... for example, the lion's mane uses the letter W and his legs use the letter L.

Whereas the robot uses a lot of Cs and Os...

Art & Drama

S4/5 artists and dramatists have made a great start back after the holiday week but they will have to keep working hard to get everything finished!

In Drama, pupils have been working on their giant candle set piece - today we used expanding foam to create some wax drips. It was quite an exciting process and ended up looking good... but the carpet did come off a little worse for wear...

S2 Childhood Friends

S2 have been working on a piece of writing about objects and toys which meant a lot to them in their childhood. Over the last week, they have been bringing in these toys to show to the rest of the class. We have all enjoyed a trip down memory lane, and the class are producing great work. Some of the toys have been reviewing what their owners have been doing too ...

S1 Poetry Readings

S1 have been studying poetry this term. They have done very well, and show a real appreciation of the writer's craft in using poetic techniques to create effect. Today, they were doing what they like best - a poetry reading, where each pupil had chosen a poem they particularly liked, and the class discussed it. It's always good to become familiar with new poems, and to hear different people's opinion on them.

Breaking news on S1/2 Social studies

Today S1/2 are applying their knowledge of earthquakes to create a news report on a recent earthquake. Working in groups they are using their ipads to research, write scripts, email links and information to one another and find images to accompany their report. Each group has presenters, interviewees, on location reporter and a producer.

Primary post office workers visit Social Studies

Vive la revolution!

Today S2 are finding out how changes in French society helped cause the revolution.

Here they are showing how French society worked in theory, with the king at the top ruling under the Divine Right of Kings.





Here they are showing the blurring of the boundary lines of Estates System- the king sometimes struggled to enforce his wishes, the middle classes in creased in numbers, the first estate contained very poor parish priests and exceedingly rich bishops...

Picasso!

S3 artists were learning about Picasso today. Here are some interesting facts:

He left over 43000 works of art when he died.

He lived into his 90s and was still painting right up to his death.

He is thought to be the father of Modern Art.

His famous dove painting was a actually based on a pigeon...

His original name was Pablo Ruiz (his father's name) but he decided to change this to Picasso (his mother's name) as Ruiz was far too common in Spain.

Lavender Ice-Cream

This afternoon in S2 French, Samantha gave a presentation on a cafe which she had visited in France. It specialises in tartines - bread with various toppings - and in home-made ice-cream. The ice-cream comes in various flavours, including lavender. Well done Samantha, it was fantastique!

S1 are revolting!!!...

S1 began a new topic in history this morning in which they will look at revolutions. This morning they worked in groups looking at what revolution means, and found out about the ongoing riots in Egypt. The groups discussed whether this could be called a revolution.

Challenge Based Learning

In Cedars school, we are constantly looking to improve and develop our learning environment, and to be at the fore of educational practice. This morning, I spent time in Mr Speirs' S3 Computing class to see Challenge Based Learning in action. Pupils are enthusiastic about this new style of learning, and are motivated and excited about the work they are producing, individually and collaboratively. They commented that because the questions and the challenge were largely self-generated, their engagement with the learning process is greatly increased. Pupils gave me some pointers on how we could make this work in their Standard Grade history lessons, and how they see it would benefit their learning...
