Lord of the Flies

The S5 class have been studying the classic novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The novel explores the theme of humans' propensity for evil through the actions of a group of schoolboys stranded on a uninhabited island. Their democratic efforts of instilling law and order soon break down and savagery soon gets a grip of the boys. The results are chilling.

The setting of the island is highly symbolic and this week we looked at it in more detail. Using the Moodboard app on their iPads, the class annotated a picture of the island, highlighting important places and what they represent in the novel.

Here is Megan's Moodboard:

Speak out!

Lloyd Hopkins from Wales has been working in the school this week. He is an excellent public speaker and debater and was working on these skills with S4/5 dramatists yesterday. Firstly he focused on how to best perform the prologue from Romeo and Juliet. After that he taught them how to prepare for and present in a debate which we then carried out - The Arts v The Sciences.... obviously the arts won, hands down!

i trip!

Today S1/2 went to Kelvingrove art Gallery to see the Glasgow Boy's exhibition as well as a quick trip round the rest of the galleries. They took their iPads with them and used them to complete a visual "treasure hunt" in an app called "Moodboard".

They had to use the app to record 4 pieces of information about each painting / sculpture shown on their moodboard.

In English, we have started a new reading initiative: each term each pupil has to read at least two books (fiction or non-fiction) and then write a review which will be posted on the Cedars Reading Blog.

Well done to Chloe Neilson and Ian Keir who have both done their term's homework already! Read their excellent reviews on the Reading Blog, as well as a few others that other pupils have contributed.

Check the blog out regularly to get some great ideas of what to read.

The second part of the reading initiative is weekly homework, which involves the pupils reading two articles of good quality non-fiction and completing a short reading activity based on each article. The purpose of this is to primarily help them improve their reading skills, which will help them with close reading. Hopefully, everyone will also find that as they read more quality literature, their writing skills will improve too! As the children now have an iPad each, they can easily access a wide range of articles on the internet- and it also means they don't need to wrestle the newspaper from Mum or Dad!
