S5 English

S5 have got off to a flying start in their English course. Our text for the term is William Golding's Lord of the Flies, and today the class were discussing questions and using their iPads to record their answers.

When a Fish Comes Home for Tea!

This blog post was first created in 2008 on our first fishing block. Many parents found themselves with a wet and slimy 2 pound problem on their hands. What to do when your child brings a fish home from school!

First you will need to gut it!
Here's how:

First you will need a sharp knife and a teaspoon...

and some nice, freshly caught fish!

Wash the fish in cold water and then turn the fish over and insert you knife right about here!

Make a slit below the skin right up between the fins to the gills.

Cut the small bridge of bone at the head between the gills.

Carefully pull out the innards from the head downwards towards the tail.

Slice the membrane down the length of the fish.

Scoop out the yucky stuff with a teaspoon and give the inside a good wash in cold water.

Brushes!

Pupils in S1 - S5 art have been learning how to use the iPad application "Brushes". It is an excellent app which is straightforward to use but can create some excellent results!

Fishing Day 2

Today the Broader curriculum fishing posse went back to Ardgowan Fishery for day 2 of our 2010 fishing block. It's been a very windy day. We had some casting lessons from Robert of the fishery and just as I was about to write 'unfortunately we haven't caught anything yet' Taylor caught our first fish of 2010! Well done Taylor! Mum, or Dad have the job of gutting when you get home!

Secondary Assemblies: Diversity

A many of you will know, we have changed the structure of the secondary assemblies this year, and are using MOnday, Wednesday and Friday's as Guidance classes. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Senior School have assembly. Tuesdays will cover aspects of the RME course, and on Thursdays pupils will learn about diversity.

This term, we are broadening our understanding of disabilities and their impact on individuals and communities.

Miss Oakley took yesterday's assembly and spoke about autism and aspergers. She displayed some of the work done by artist, Peter Howsen, and discussed the bipoic film, which details Temple Grandin's struggle to overcome the difficulties facing her as someone with autism, nd shows how she went on to become a top scientist in the humane livestock industry.

Cross curricular Projects in S4

S4 chemists are undertaking a project researching a famous chemist and producing a report on them. They are working in groups, and are recieving input from Miss Bell on chemists, and from Miss Rukin on research skills. The groups are choosing their chemists today and have made a plan, with help, on how they will divide up the work.

Dr Leah Marks, geneticist and lecturer at the University of Glasgow is going to mark the projects.

Watch this space to see how the pupils do!
